INTRODUCTION :

Ever Since We Loved, is an adapted screenplay based on the novel, Everything Goes, written by Feng Tang about his student days at Peking University.

Ever Since We Loved is the story of a group of students enrolled in medical college in the 1990s. The narrative unravels as a sad and humorous story, as the students negotiate the demands of university and youth; alienation, growth, and the ache of love and desire.

Qui Shui, a young man with a passion for writing martial arts novels, enrolls in medical school. He has just left his high school girlfriend and first love, Xiao Man. In his class at college he meets several new friends, including Bai Lu who becomes his new girlfriend; Hou Pu, a virgin who loves singing in corridors; Huang Qi, a student enamored with big breasts; Wei Yan, a girl with a crush on the professor, Mr. Bai; Mao Da, a classmate who’s lazy but lucky; and Hu, an elderly caretaker.

Bai Lu, Qui Shui’s new girlfriend, is obsessed with control and she tries to strictly monitor whom he sees and spends time with. Qui Shui grows tired of being dominated in this way. When Qui Shui encounters a beautiful older woman, Liu Qing, in a hotel lobby, he is immediately attracted by her sadness and vulnerability and helps her out of an embarrassing situation when he sees her harassed by a man.

Qui Shui and Liu Qing start a secret platonic relationship. Bai Lu, sensing this connection, confronts Qui Shui and tries to control the situation, but Qui Shui has fallen in love with Liu Qing. Qui Shui, wanting to see both women, becomes emotionally tangled and confused by the situation.

After much soul searching Qui Shui decides to stop seeing Liu Qing and be faithful to Bai Lu. However, a series of unexpected events happen involving the three loves of his life and act as catalysts to end Qui Shui’s bloom of youth. Xiao Man, his high school girlfriend, Bai Lu, his college girlfriend, and Liu Qing, the woman he is truly in love with, all suddenly disappear from his life. Qui Shui is left adrift, questioning both his heart and his future.

After graduation, the college friends each go their own ways. They have experienced the collision of dreams, human nature and sexual desire, and must move forward towards their individual destinies – fates that unravel in ways unexpected and inconceivable to the visions of their student days.

Qui Shui abandons medicine to write martial arts novels, and then abandons literature to become a bookseller. In his heart though, he is unable to abandon his love for Liu Qing.
